Press Releases | House Passes Legislation to Improve Job Training Programs
Rep. McCarthy voted in favor of the Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success Act (SECTORS Act) in order to coordinate and improve job training programs and strengthen competitiveness for American industries. Through a combination of resources, this bill will support sector, or industry partnerships, which partner businesses, unions, educators, and the public workforce system to develop and implement plans that help workers train for and advance in high-demand and emerging industries.
The SECTORS Act will require the Department of Labor to set up a grant program to encourage industry or business sector partnerships to participate in training efforts for industries that share a common workforce. These grants will bring industry and education and workforce leaders together to identify training needs and skill gaps critical to competitiveness and align training programs to industry demand, particularly for higher skill, high-priority occupations, while also helping businesses to recruit and retrain workers and improving overall job quality and strengthening career ladders for employees.
“Industries such as manufacturing, information technology, healthcare and renewable energy continuously face problems finding sufficiently trained workers and during a recession, it is harder to keep the skilled workers that they do have,” said Rep. McCarthy. “This legislation will not only create and save jobs, but it will help create and save American industries.”
