Recently, the House of Representatives passed and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy voted in favor of the 2010 Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act to strengthen border security and address the threat of increased violence along the Southwest border. 
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy voted to save and create almost 320,000 jobs – including saving the jobs of 160,000 teachers and preventing the layoffs of tens of thousands of police officers, firefighters, and nurses. 
Recently, Rep. McCarthy voted in favor of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2011. The House passed this legislation, which will provide $77.3 billion in discretionary spending for FY2011. 
Throughout the 111thCongress, Congresswoman McCarthy has passed legislation to help bring down the deficit and set a path toward long-term fiscal balance. The House has passed numerous bills to reduce the deficit, crack down on wasteful government spending, and impose tough fiscal discipline. 
Resolution Recognizes Role in Keeping Our Nation’s Airspace Safe for Travelers 

Rep. McCarthy voted in favor of the Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success Act (SECTORS Act) in order to coordinate and improve job training programs and strengthen competitiveness for American industries. Through a combination of resources, this bill will support sector, or industry partnerships, which partner businesses, unions, educators, and the public workforce system to develop and implement plans that help workers train for and advance in high-demand and emerging industries. 

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy voted to stand with American families, extending unemployment benefits for millions of Americans who have earned them through a lifetime of work and lost their jobs through no fault of their own. The benefits are a proven boost to the American economy, shown by economists to create jobs as families spend into the economy.
The Education and Labor Committee recently held a mark-up of the Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act to expand access and improve the nutritional quality of meals in schools and child care.
Rep. Carolyn McCarthy applauded the Veterans Administration’s plan to improve care for our veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The new rules will make it easier for veterans – including those who may have been denied benefits in the past – to receive the care and benefits they need and have earned.
Congresswoman McCarthy introduced The Firearm Owners Responsibility Act, which will require reporting of lost and stolen guns to the police.
Recently, Rep. McCarthy introduced the Ending Corporal Punishment in Schools Act.  This legislation aims to eliminate the use of corporal punishment in schools.  
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy issued the following statement regarding the 5-4, U.S. Supreme Court decision in McDonald v. Chicago:
Rep. McCarthy introduced the Turning Around Low-Performing Public High Schools Act (H.R. 5467), which will establish a program where the Secretary of Education will award contracts to nonprofit organizations with national experience that enter into partnerships with local educational agencies to turn around low-performing public high schools. 
Rep. McCarthy voted for, and the House passed H.R. 5623, the Homebuyers Assistance and Improvement Act. For those who entered into a contact to buy a home by April 30, this legislation extends the deadline for closing on that home, in order to be eligible for the first-time homebuyer tax credit, to October 1, 2010.

“I oppose the exemption that the DISCLOSE Act gives to National Rifle Association (NRA), and it is for this reason I voted against the legislation.

In May, Mexican President Felipe Calderón addressed a joint session of Congress in which he asked members to reinstate a ban on assault weapons to help clamp down on violence in both Mexico and the United States, sighting, "We must find a better way to fix the problem". He further noted that ““We have seized 75,000 guns and assault weapons in Mexico in the past three years, and more than 80 percent of those we have been able to trace came from the United States.”

Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy issued the following statement in response to President Calderón:
Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY), introduced H.R. 5708, the Higher Education Affordability and Equity Act of 2010. This legislation will extend and improve certain expiring higher education tax provisions, and provide additional tax relief for scholarships and grant recipients.

Carolyn McCarthy (NY-04) and Todd Russell Platts (PA-19) introduced the Family Engagement in Education Act (H.R. 5211) which would strengthen family engagement in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that Congressional leaders have said they would like to reauthorize this year. 
Congresswoman McCarthy voted in support of the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act. This important legislation will provide much-needed support for our veterans and their families.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) that would catalogue and preserve the stories and experiences of Americans who were involved with the civil rights movement.  The bill, H. R. 586, the Civil Rights Oral History Project, will create a joint effort between the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Library of Congress to collect oral histories of the people that were involved in the civil rights movement and preserve their stories for future generations.
